Scholarship Recipient

Sophia Velez

2011 Scholar

Institution: Colorado State University
Year: Freshman
Scholarship Recipient: 1st Yr.
Home Town: Aurora, Colorado
Major: Political Science and Sociology

Sophia is a one of nine children, she attended Central High school in Aurora where she was a member of the Thespian Society and a member of the women's soccer team. She also contributed many hours of community service, raising funds for a community garden and volunteering with the Dolores House, a shelter for abused women and children.

She saw many around her not succeeding, dropping out of school and involved in destructive activities. "I wanted to prove that children in my community are worth our school system's believing in them. I was motivated to take an academic stand, to choose a different path and set my goals on earning a diploma and college degree, and to encourage those around me to do the same." Sophia is inspired by Javad and Vivian. "They wanted more out of life, and were not afraid to take a stand for what they believed in.

"I want to serve those who have fallen victim to crime. I plan to double major in political science and sociology, with the hope of pursuing a degree in law just as Javad had dreamed. With a degree in law, I plan to give back to those around me and to help those in need. I plan to use my education to open a shelter for victims of abuse, to help them see light at the end of the tunnel.

"I come from the same community as Javad, a community where violence has become tolerated because it happens on a regular basis. Javad and Vivian took a stand against violence but were wrongfully taken before they could take the final step in their stand. It is because of the aspirations I have of following in Javad's and Vivian's footsteps, by taking a stand for what is right and becoming an advocate to end abuse, that I am proud to be a recipient of the scholarship."
